Satoru Iwata has revealed that Nintendo is now working on a new console. The new console is called NX and it was announced today. The console will be a "dedicated game system". The console is going to be developed with the Japanese mobile manufacturer DeNa. This means there will be a new console that is going to be dedicated to phone games. You can read the translated announcement here.
Here is the announcement:
_"Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service." _
This will mean they will only release PC or mobile related games on this system. For everyone that have been saying that Nintendo should go into the mobile market are listening to these critics. They are also doing it in their own way by creating their own device dedicated to their games.
"Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service, which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, the new hardware with a brand new concept NX, smart devices and PCs," Iwata said. In a Q&A during the media event today, Iwata said that NX is not directly related to the service platform.
Meaning that games might come for this device alone and will be exclusive to it. Nintendo will use this new console as new console to join Wii U and 3DS, and will just be as important.
"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX'. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year."
We will see more of it next year, with perhaps a release date as well. We will have to wait and see what this means and what the new console will be like. The Wii U has been struggling, but the 3DS has been doing well. With this console they might try to get more to play their games and reach a bigger audience like they did with the Wii.
